Kalamazoo sits downwind of Lake Michigan, which is the fact that governs roofing here. Lake effect brings a lot of snow, much of it arriving in bursts and sitting for weeks, and the winters are long enough that a roof goes through the freeze and thaw cycle dozens of times a year. That is a different kind of wear from hail or ultraviolet, and it attacks a different part of the roof.
The failure is at the edge
A Kalamazoo roof rarely dies in the middle of a shingle field. It dies along the bottom three feet. Heat escaping from the house warms the upper roof deck, snow above it melts, the water runs down and reaches the overhang, which hangs out over cold air and is not being warmed by anything. There it refreezes. Over a winter that ridge of ice grows, water pools behind it, and because shingles shed water rather than seal against it, that standing water goes back up under the courses and into the house.
Everything else follows from this. It is why the sensible money on a Michigan roof goes into ice and water membrane at the eaves, attic air sealing and balanced ventilation, rather than into a premium shingle. It is why soffit, fascia and gutter rot is a genuine service category here and barely exists in dry states. And it is why an attic that is well sealed and properly cold is the best roof protection a house in this county can have.
The licence, which is real here
Michigan is not a state where anyone with a ladder can roof a house. Roofing sits among the maintenance and alteration trades named in MCL 339.2404, so a state licence is required, and the City of Kalamazoo’s own reroof permit application asks for the residential builders licence number and its expiry date. That makes it checkable in a way it simply is not in Missouri or most of Colorado.
Michigan reinforces it from the other direction too. Under MCL 339.2412 an unlicensed contractor cannot sue to collect payment for the work. Ask for the licence number before anyone starts, and ask for it in writing.
